Planning a driveway gate in Florida.
A gate that swings true for years starts with a few decisions before any steel gets cut. Here's what to figure out first.
1. Measure the opening
Measure between the posts, or where the posts will go, at the top and at the bottom. Note the ground: is the driveway flat, does it slope up or down from the opening, or does it crown in the middle? A swing gate needs clearance over the highest point of ground in its path.
2. Swing or slide
- Swing gates (single or double) are the most common. They need open, fairly level ground on the side they swing into.
- Slide gates roll along the fence line. They suit sloped driveways or tight spaces, but need room beside the opening at least as long as the gate.
3. Posts carry the gate
Most sagging gates are really leaning posts. A heavy steel gate needs a post sized for its weight and width, set deep in concrete. If you're reusing existing posts, send a photo so we can tell you whether they'll hold.
4. Plan for an opener now
Even if you're adding an automatic opener later, tell us which kind you're considering. Openers need mounting points, and some need a particular gate frame or hinge setup. Building those in is easy. Adding them to a finished gate is harder.
5. Pick a finish for Florida weather
- Paint is the least expensive and easy to touch up, but needs upkeep in our humidity.
- Powder coat is tougher and more even than paint.
- Hot-dip galvanizing, alone or under paint, gives the longest rust protection.
Finishes are quoted per job. See what's included in a quote.
6. Check the rules
Some HOAs, neighborhoods and municipalities have rules on gate height, style or setback, and some require a permit. It's worth a quick check before the design is final.
7. Add the personal touch
Initials, a family name, a ranch brand or a simple design can be CNC plasma-cut into the gate or added as a panel. Send your idea or a photo of a style you like.
